Gary Vee is a good person to look up to in many facets of life.
He’s a great business man and also has a great overall outlook on life.
He preaches things like empathy, self awareness, hard work, patience, gratitude and more.
For this blog post, I want to do a deep dive into what Gary Vee has to say in regards to setting goals and pursuing them.
Let’s dive into it.
The Importance Of Work Ethic
It’s one thing to have ambitions. It’s another thing to match your work ethic to your ambitions.
Gary preaches this point a lot.
Whenever you see people coming to him for advice, he takes an approach to see how hard they are working.
People will come up to him saying they want to be a YouTuber, and then he’ll ask how many videos they post per week.
If their answer doesn’t match the goal, he often goes berserk. Rightfully so.
Gary believes that the only controllable factor for success is how hard you work.
Setting Big Goals And Pursuing Them
When it comes to setting goals and pursuing them, Gary believes you should have a big macro goal.
This way when you hit your smaller goals, you’re never really satisfied.
You’ll still be pumped to hit that big time goal you set.
For Gary Vee, he wants to be the greatest entrepreneur of all time. So even when he has smaller wins, he keeps pushing.
Another example would be his dream to buy the JETS. That’s a goal that pushes him to keep moving forward as well.
The Role of Passion in Achieving Goals
One of the topics Gary is very passionate about is passion.
He often talks about listening to yourself and not doing things to please other people.
He believes, “if you’re not 100% pumped every second, your shit is broken”.
Being pumped on a day to day basis comes with doing things you’re not passionate about.
If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, he believes you should go do a bunch of things and see what sticks.
You won’t know until you try.
If you do know your passion, go all in. Even if you fail, you won’t live with the pain of regret.
Gary believes that the only way you’re going to work 15 hours a day and make the necessary sacrifices is if you’re doing something you love. It’s about finding your passion and then working tirelessly to make your dreams a reality.
Financial Discipline in Business
Financial discipline is a crucial aspect of running a successful business. It’s about making smart decisions with your money and ensuring your business’s long-term sustainability.
Gary Vee often shares advice on financial discipline, especially for young businesses. He emphasizes the importance of reinvesting profits back into the business rather than spending on personal luxuries. This approach not only helps the business grow but also ensures its financial stability.
He has a saying, “make every penny work like a dollar”. This means maximizing the value of every dollar that comes into the business. It’s about being frugal, resourceful, and strategic with your finances.
Long story short, if you want to achieve your goals you’re going to have to make sacrifices financially to push your goal forward.
Treat The Race Like a Marathon
One story that resonates with me is one of Gary when he worked at his dads liquor store.
He said, “do you know what it feels like to be 26 years old and have people that you went to highschool with come to your dads liquor store, look you dead in the face as they pull up in their BMW and say, Oh you work for your dad?… And you ring them up on their case of champagne and you bring it out to their car and put it in their trunk. And they look you in the face with Pity…I lived that life, and the way I took that scene was, I’ll see you in ten years (expletive).
Now look at Gary.
The key is to be patient and treat the race like a marathon.
Maybe what you’re doing will take a little bit longer than others, but continue to push and keep a chip on your shoulder while doing it (just like Gary).
